Apollo Hotel on Colaba Causeway was built in 1887 and run by a Parsi proprietor, Hormusji Modi. It is located at the junction of Landsdowne Road (Maha Kavi Bhushan Marg) and Colaba Causeway and opposite Hotel Majestic (Aamdar Nivas). E. W. Pyrke was made a partner proprietor in late 1904, a year after the Taj had opened, and after which the business was conducted under the modified name of PyrkeÕs Apollo Hotel. Renamed Metro House now, the building has been converted into offices and guest houses for budget tourists. The ground floor of the building houses one of the most iconic eateries on Colaba Causeway, CafŽ Mondegar, famous for its jukebox and murals by cartoonist Mario Miranda. Whilst one wall is dedicated to Life in Mumbai, the other wall is dedicated to Atmosphere in the CafŽ. Mario Miranda sketched his drawings on canvas before they were rendered on the restaurant walls with the help of students from Sir J.J. Institute of Applied Art under his supervision.
